Puerto Banús Apartment Interiors: How to Start Right
The light in Puerto Banús does a lot of the work for you. Marina apartments tend to be bright, open-plan, and smaller than the houses most newcomers arrive from. That changes what you should buy, and in what order. The aim isn't a showroom. It's a flat that works from the first evening and that you can finish gradually. What follows is a practical run-through: palette, materials, zoning, and where to start.
Start with the light and the palette
Strong coastal light, bounced off the water, changes how colour reads indoors. A white that looked warm in the shop can turn cold and flat by mid-afternoon. A mid-tone can bleach out completely. Before you commit to anything permanent, live in the space for a week and watch how it shifts from morning to sunset.
For the base, keep to warm whites, sand, clay, soft terracotta, and muted olive. Bring blue in sparingly. A few glazed ceramic vases or serving pieces from our accessories range echo the water without tipping the room into a nautical theme. Restraint reads better than colour here. The view is the feature; the interior should sit behind it.
Choose materials that suit salt air and heavy sun. Linen, aged wood, rattan, wool, jute, and ceramic all age well and stay breathable. Linen covers from our textiles collection are worth the small premium over synthetics, because they soften with washing rather than pilling. Avoid anything that fades, warps, or looks plasticky in direct light. Cheap gloss finishes and thin veneers show their age fast on this coast.
Zone the open plan, then add layers
Most marina apartments are one continuous space, so you mark out rooms with objects rather than walls. A rug anchors the living area. A hand-knotted Beni Ourain or a flatweave kilim from our Moroccan rugs shows where the sitting zone ends without cutting off the light. A runner does the same job for a hallway or the strip beside the kitchen.
Lighting matters more than people expect. Skip the single ceiling fixture and build in layers instead: a couple of handmade ceramic table lamps for the evening, plus a floor lamp near the seating. Warm bulbs keep the palette warm after dark. For storage that adds texture without crowding a small room, rattan and woven baskets from our accessories keep clutter down while adding depth. In a compact flat, warmth comes from a few well-made things, not from filling every surface.
The terrace, and finishing slowly
Treat the balcony or terrace as a second living room, because on this coast that's where most of the living happens. You'll want textiles and lanterns that hold up outdoors — our outdoor range covers sun-resistant cushions and terrace lighting — plus a small table for morning coffee. Olive-wood boards and serveware from our kitchenware collection move easily between the kitchen and an evening outside.
You don't have to furnish all of this at once, and you shouldn't. The workable rule is one handmade piece per room — a Moroccan rug, a hand-thrown lamp, a woven throw — chosen deliberately, with the rest filled in over months. Layered this way, Moroccan, Turkish, and European pieces look collected rather than bought as a set, largely because they were. This is also why we work the way we do. Prudence and her mother founded Nestology together, after years spent sourcing for other companies, and they make a good team. Her mum brings the design eye and the vision; Prudence knows the selling side, having been sales and store manager for some of the biggest furniture stores on the Costa del Sol, and top international salesperson for the UK's largest furniture retailer, with over 150 stores. They started this one partly to offer well-made pieces without the markups the coast is known for.
So, a starting point for an empty flat: pick the room you actually sit in most, and buy one good handmade object for it. Usually a rug. Get that right, live with it, and let the flat build from there.
If you're ever along the coast, our little shop in Fuengirola is worth the stop — it's easier to feel how a piece of wall decor will sit in that marina light once you're standing beside it, and you're always welcome to just browse and make yourself at home. Everything from our wall decor collection is there to be picked up and lived with, not admired behind glass.
